file:///usr/share/sane/sane-backends.html#S-EPSON2 によると、
sane-1.0.21 の epson2 は、PM-A840 をサポートしているようなので、

# sane-find-scanner -q
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x083c [USB2.0 MFP(Hi-Speed)]) at libusb:001:005

で、設定ファイルを
/etc/sane.d/dll.conf
epson2

/etc/sane.d/epson2.conf
usb 0x04b8 0x083c

のようにしたのですが、

# scanimage -L

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

# scanimage -d epson2:libusb:001:005
scanimage: open of device epson2:libusb:001:005 failed: Invalid argument

# scanimage -d epson2:/dev/usb/scanner0
scanimage: open of device epson2:/dev/usb/scanner0 failed: Invalid argument

となってしまいます。
スキャナの設定なんてえらく久しぶりなので、
何か間違っているか不足しているかもしれませんが、
動いている方がいらっしゃいましたらお教え願います。
