お疲れ様です。私も，先日のxsaneのバージョンアップで、今まで使えていたPM-A840のスキャナーが使えなくてあわてて
はまりました。

さて、

epson
にしました。

のコメントをはずします。

このメッセージが出ても，とりあえず無視して，

EPSON AVASYSのページからスキャナ ドライバの iscanをダウンロードします。xsaneも共にインストールして，
$ sudo xsane
とやれば、デバイスを認識するようです。
root でなければ動かなければ，デバイスの所有権をいじる必要があると思います。
